Get your house summer-ready

Summer is here, time to let the air in (minus the pollen of course) but let us make space for more light and air and brighten up our homes. Summer is the time for a seasonal refresh and introducing colour and themes to your homes while you accessorize them. Whether you aim to create a relaxing beach house or a calming oasis effect, our design team has some summer-inspired design and decor ideas to refresh your home this summer.

  • Bring in the colours – You could look at a potential paint job for the house, but if that is too much start small, like dishes. Add some summertime colour and pattern with accent dishes and a vibrant tablecloth to your family dinner table. You can mix bright floral, tropical, or nautical-theme dishes with your everyday plates and bowls. Colour themes including aqua, pastel yellow, aqua, millennial pink, beige, and white work well.

  • Update the furniture – Even if new furniture is too much, consider using bright and glassy paints to offer a refreshing and modern edge to the furniture and your house a facelift. Bright oranges, shades of blue, yellows and reds are ideal additions.

  • Clear up the backyard – The time to get outdoors starts with your backyard. Put together the new bar and barbeque setup that you have been dreaming about. An inexpensive cabinet at a flea market or second-hand store can easily help decorate your backyard for a party throughout the summer on a budget. Hang some light fixtures for nighttime visibility and bring in a pop of colour—bright oranges, yellows, and reds are ideal—to set the summer aura.

  • Add some plants – Indoor plants add aesthetics and good vibes and can be beneficial during summer. They can help to improve air quality, increase humidity, reduce stress, improve sleep, and boost mood. There are many options available for both seasoned plant enthusiasts and beginners. You can keep your home cool by choosing plants that fit your lifestyle and environment. A good spot for shady trees and plants is on the east and west sides of the house, as they can block out the sun’s rays. You can also grow vines and creepers on the balcony grills and indoor screens to help cool your home.

  • Use natural fabrics – Summer is all about letting the light and air in, it is time to let go of the hot and sticky leather couch in summer. Fabrics like silk, satin, leather, and polyester tend to absorb heat quickly. It is advisable to choose linen and cotton upholstery. These materials are light, airy, and breathable, which promotes airflow and ventilation while they can instantly brighten up a dull-looking room.

  • Create more space – Summer is the time to remove the extra, Trade the big recliners for subtle chairs and small tables. Time to put the woollens and big rugs into the storage and bring the light rugs into the house.

  • Create a new theme – You can make your home feel like a beach house by using a subtle nautical decor. Navy blue hues and white stripes can work wonders, or you can find and add a boat-shaped relic. You can also focus on beachy elements or art pieces to add a summery feel. A nautical painting paired with blue bedding, or some coastal accessories can create a cozy coastal bedroom. You can make your guest bedroom feel like a seaside resort by swapping heavy pillows and blankets for lighter fabrics, like linen and cotton.

  • Add flowers – If you would like to feel more connected with nature, consider adding some lovely flowers to your living space. You can use large potted plants or freshly picked flowers in vases or hanging baskets by a window. Not only will they help purify the air indoors, but studies show that being around nature can also improve your mental health. For a summery feel, you might choose bold oranges, radiant yellows, or vibrant pinks.

  • Add Accessories – Little additions can make a significant difference and adding stuff that reflects your signature style and creates a statement. Some general additions can be beanbags, fairy lights, hammocks, lanterns rugs and can function as simple joy-evoking additions.

  • Create a Photo Gallery – Accentuate a wall by printing, framing, and arranging your family photos on it. This summer decor idea is a simple yet effective way to add personality to your home. It also makes for great conversations with your guests as you reminisce about your most precious memories and travels.
